Strengthening Women’s Skills to Build Lasting Self-Reliance in Niamey

As part of the implementation of the Ayorou and Niamey Communities Resilience Support Programme (PARCAN/Gakassineye), CADEV-Niger organized two training sessions for women from Communes II and V of Niamey.

📍 In Banizoumbou II (Commune II) with the HADIN KAY Union 📍 In Lamordé (Commune V) with the FOTI WODI Union

These trainings brought together around sixty women from local groups, with a clear objective: to strengthen their technical and entrepreneurial skills in order to sustainably improve their living conditions.

Practical Skills in the Service of Self-Reliance

Participants were trained in the processing and preservation of several local agri-food products, including:

Millet-based couscous and dégué,

Moringa powder,

Tomato purée,

Wheat-flour biscuits,

Spice blends and black chili,

Traditional wagassi cheese.

These concrete skills enable women to create high-value-added products suited to the realities of the local market.

Hygiene and Cosmetics: Accessible Economic Opportunities

The trainings also covered the production of hygiene and cosmetic products:

Liquid soap,

Powder detergent (OMO),

Bleach,

Household gel,

Incense and body perfumes.

These are all income-generating activities that are easily accessible and suited to households’ everyday needs.

From Production to Marketing

Beyond production, particular emphasis was placed on: ✔️ Packaging techniques, ✔️ Labelling and product enhancement, ✔️ Marketing strategies.

Because producing is not enough: you also need to know how to sell and position yourself in the market.

One More Step Toward Family Resilience

Thanks to a practical, participatory approach tailored to local needs (conducted in the local languages Hausa and Zarma), these trainings enabled beneficiaries to acquire directly applicable skills.

By investing in women, PARCAN helps to:

Strengthen their economic independence,

Reduce their vulnerability,

And promote the resilience of urban families in the face of social challenges.
