Episcopal ordination of Mgr Ignatius Kan-Murum ANIPU: a historic page opens for the diocese of Maradi

A solemn atmosphere and palpable emotion this Saturday, 31 May 2025 at the Cathedral Notre Dame de Lourdes in Maradi, packed to capacity for an exceptional event: the episcopal ordination and installation of Monsignor Ignatius Kan-Murum ANIPU, newly appointed bishop of the diocese of Maradi.

The ceremony drew an impressive crowd, testifying to the spiritual and social significance of this unique moment. Guests included bishops, priests religious brothers and religious sisters, the faithful of the Church-Family of God, regional authorities including the governor and his staff, traditional authorities including the sultans of Gobir and Katsina, and religious leaders of other faiths including members of CDIR Maradi and Zinder, as well as members of the Board of Directors and staff of CADEV Niger, not forgetting representatives of Catholic Relief Services (CRS). All answered the call to attend this ecclesial celebration of great importance.

This day marks the handover between Mgr Ambroise Ouédraogo, Apostolic Administrator, and his successor Mgr Ignatius Kan-Murum ANIPU. After twenty-five years of apostolic ministry carried out with faith, humility and steadfastness, Mgr Ambroise is taking a well-deserved retirement, leaving behind a rich legacy of service and pastoral commitment.

In an atmosphere of spiritual fervor, marked by liturgical hymns, fervent prayers and profound speeches, the faithful lived the different stages of the ordination with great intensity. One of the most powerful moments was the presentation of the episcopal crosier, symbol of the pastoral staff and the spiritual authority now conferred on Mgr Ignatius Kan-Murum ANIPU as Bishop of Maradi by Cardinal Philippe Ouédraogo, Archbishop Emeritus of Ouagadougou.

A career devoted to dialogue and formation

A member of the Society of Missionaries of Africa (White Fathers), Mgr Ignatius ANIPU brings a wealth of pastoral and intellectual experience to the diocese. Before his appointment, he headed the Centre Foi et Rencontre (CF) as well as the Institut de Formation Islamo-Chrétienne (IFIC) in Bamako, Mali. His career reflects a deep commitment to interreligious dialogue, peace, and human and spiritual formation.

With this new stage, the diocese of Maradi embarks on a pastoral renewal, led by a man of faith, dialogue and vision.
